Story Time: “The Hounds of Annwn” (Ep.008)

“The Hounds of Annwn” Abstract: A small carvan of traders witness a bear taken down by a mysterious pack of hounds.

A few thoughts:

“The Hounds of Annwn” is an excerpt of an up-coming fantasy novella entitled A Merchant’s Tale, written by Michael Dellert. For me, this story is subtly laced with encouragements to return to boyhood- not an idyllic fantasy of childhood but the visceral curiosity of being a boy. I found myself chasing after the bear with the characters just to see it again, then standing over it’s body to see how death had changed it. I remembered the fear and haphazard attempts at self-defense that attended the “bright flashes of light” and “sizzling pops” of my childhood. More than anything, I was reminded of how something that held my attention so entirely could like the bear begin to “smell” ordinary, and be replaced in an instant with another fresh curiosity.

Michael lives in the Greater New York City area. Following a traditional publishing career spanning nearly two decades, he now works as a freelance writer, editor, publishing consultant, and writing coach. He is also the sole writer, editor, and publisher of the blog MDellertDotCom: Adventures in Indie Publishing. He is the author of two fantasy fiction novellas: Hedge King in Winter available on Amazon and A Merchant’s Tale available for pre-order.

Fun Fact: Michael’s poetry and short fiction have appeared in literary journals such as The Backporch Review, The Harbinger, Idiom, and Venture. His poetry has also appeared in the anthologies The Golden Treasury of Great Poems and Dance on the Horizon, and he is a two-time winner of the Golden Poet Award from World of Poetry Press.

Favorite Line: “To the southeast, four furrows opened through the tall grasses, like the wakes left by great sharks in the waves of the Summer Sea.”
